Preseason 2022/23 Analysis

Preseason

Last season towards the end was a disappointment. I think most of Manchester United supporters would have had doubts in the mind regarding the the future of the club as Ralf Rangnick tenure ended. The big names like Cavani, Matic, Matta, Pogba and Lingard leaving the club or contracts not getting renewed put pressure on the new Gaffer.

Erick Ten Hag ( Gaffer), came in and for a first time and has set the rules of engagement with the players right from the onset. His vision is clear and the style that he wants the players to play is very evident in the training routines. The players have come out and applauded the intensity and his clarity how he wants the team to play.

In my opinion the club have backed the Gaffer in the transfer market by purcahsing the players that he wants and would suite his style of play. The key to note here is Gaffer has gone for the players that he knows (Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Chris Ericksen, and in pursuit of Frenkie de Jong) and trust's and not gone for the big names. This is important in leadership style "Controlling the Variables", this is a new place for the Gaffer and only control he has is on the backroom staff and the players that he is bringing to suite his style and implement his philosophy . My understanding is new players will be vital in the transition to possession based football style of play than the counter attacking football we are used to from united since Jose and Olie.

The preseason results have been very promising, United won the first three games and the result to highlight was the 4-0 victory over Liverpool. It can be argued that Liverpool did not have the strongest side but still to beat the team that was 34 points ahead of us was a big statement.

Preseason was also an opportunity for Gaffer to take a good look and the youngsters from the academy. Number of the academy player impressed in the preseason the likes of Zidane Iqbal, James Garner and Alejandro Garnacho. I am sure that Gaffer must be thinking of naming a few in the first team to put pressure on likes of Martial, McTominay and Rashford.

Till now the Gaffer has shown that he can keep the squad together and motivated. Gaffer's biggest test will come as Ronaldo saga unfolds. Till now he has been positive and transparent on the conversations that he has had with Ronaldo, but only time will tell if he can enforce the same level of discipline on Ronaldo or not. If Rolnado leaves United for another club that might help the Gaffer to control the team better.

I still think we are short on the Central Defensive Midfielder (CDM) Position. This has been a big weakness for us over the years. Another area to strengthen is the the forward line, if Ronaldo leaves we should try to get a forward that can make an impact. Martial has shown promise and looks hungry for success, but only time will tell if he could get us 20+ goals this season.

Lisandro Martinez

After protracted negotiations with Ajax, Manchester United were successful in securing a £60M move for Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine center back, known as the "butcher of Amsterdam" is known for his tenacity, aggression, and composure at the back. He is a left footed CB which United do not currently possess. Having a left footed centre back in your side is crucial for opening passing angles and lanes that you would typically struggle to do with a right footed CB playing LCB.  A lot has been said about Martinez's height or lack there of. Many people question whether he can deal with the physicality of the Premier League and especially some of the tall target men a lot of sides employ. In certain situations like set pieces and balls over the top he can be targeted, and in the right situation, exploited. However, Martinez's football IQ and reading of the game allows him to proactively avoid isolation in such situations. He is aggressive in his pressing and closing dow...

Christian Eriksen

Manchester United secured the signing of free agent Christian Eriksen beating off competition from Brentford. Ordinarily, United don’t expect to compete with a club like Brentford for a signing, but it really was up in the air where he would ultimately end up. Eriksen enjoyed a productive comeback to the Premier League with Brentford last season and so it genuinely was a consideration to go back there. Ultimately, the allure of Manchester United, Ten Hag's project, and previous experience with the manager's inner workings (i.e., he was allowed to train with Ajax after his departure from Inter due to his heart condition) possibly swayed Eriksen's mind.  In my opinion, this transfer was an absolute no-brainer. Firstly, Eriksen was free and you typically don’t find a player of that calibre available. Secondly, Bruno has long been United's only creative outlet, the only player good enough to occupy the 10. This now changes with Eriksen being a capable deputy and even potent...

Garnacho: The Player to Watch This Season

Alejandro Garnacho, an 18-year-old phenom from the United academy, is a player to watch this upcoming season. Born in Spain, the Argentinian national has trained with the GOATs: Messi, Ronaldo, and maybe even himself in the future.  Garnacho has it all lined up: playing with Manchester United, a strong national team in Argentina, and the skill to make it to the top. This season is crucial to the next chapter of Garnacho's story. Ten Hag's reign at United could make his career, or break it.  How Garnacho performs will be scrutinized by first-team coaches, determining if this is the next youngster to cement his place in the squad. But if you truly care about the future of the club, his performances are what every fan should watch this season.

Tyrell Malacia

Tyrell Malacia was signed from Dutch club Feyenoord for £15M and became Erik Ten Hag's 1st signing. Many were annoyed by this move because it didn’t really address a problem position or an area where there was a significant need. This was particularly compounded by the fact that United had one of their worst ever seasons and there were more pressing needs and positions that required replacing. At the time Malacia was signed, the club already had Luke Shaw, Alex Telles, and Brandon Williams as left back options. While it is obvious that Malacia is better than the latter two, it remains to be seen whether he can replace Luke Shaw. At the surface, this could be viewed as a depth signing. However, we are in dire need of upgrading the first team. After watching preseason and understanding a little bit more of Malacia's game, it became apparent that he might not be that bad a signing. Ten Hag was a known admirer of Malacia after his dominant performance against Ajax last season. Part...
