Manchester United secured the signing of free agent Christian Eriksen beating off competition from Brentford. Ordinarily, United don’t expect to compete with a club like Brentford for a signing, but it really was up in the air where he would ultimately end up. Eriksen enjoyed a productive comeback to the Premier League with Brentford last season and so it genuinely was a consideration to go back there. Ultimately, the allure of Manchester United, Ten Hag's project, and previous experience with the manager's inner workings (i.e., he was allowed to train with Ajax after his departure from Inter due to his heart condition) possibly swayed Eriksen's mind.
In my opinion, this transfer was an absolute no-brainer. Firstly, Eriksen was free and you typically don’t find a player of that calibre available. Secondly, Bruno has long been United's only creative outlet, the only player good enough to occupy the 10. This now changes with Eriksen being a capable deputy and even potentially surpassing Bruno himself. Competition is always paramount in a squad that hopes to win trophies. Eriksen is not just a 10, he is actually a pretty versatile player. Eriksen was employed deeper in midfield for Brentford and actually was very effective there. His final ball, resistance to the press, and set piece proficiency could allow him to play as the more progressive partner in a pivot. In the game against Brentford as well, Ten Hag employed him as the defensive midfielder or the number six. At only 30 years of age, there’s still quite a lot left to play for and I think Eriksen could be one of the key figures this season. This is one of the few good value-for-money signings United have actually made this window.
